1 Kings 3:9
So give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong.

What would you ask God for if you knew you'd get it? Money? Fame? The ability to make people applaud you wherever you go? (Sorry, that was a bit wierd, but it would be cool.) Our verse this week is what King Solomon asked for. It was a brilliant request and it revealed that he already had a bit of wisdom. But, unless I'm really mistaken, you're not a king and neither am I. And more than likely we won't be taking a throne anytime soon either. So what could a king's prayer possibly have to do with us? The answer is surprisingly simple...

You and I lead people. It's true. Just look behind you (okay, I didn't really mean right now). There are people who are watching what you do so that they'll have some idea of what to do, too. And if we don't get anything else out of Solomon's prayer, let's make sure we get this: you cannot lead people if you don't know the difference between right and wrong. Solomon knew that. He knew that he couldn't possibly govern the people without a keen sense of right and wrong. And you I and can't either.

You can't lead your family or your employees or your dog without it. In the words of a really old credit card company, you really can't even leave home without it. At some point we are ships with damaged anchors adrift aimlessly in the sea if we don't have discernment. It is the anchor that holds us and you'd better make sure yours is working. Our culture is not the place you want to be floating around without moral security.

Right and wrong really exist and recognizing that can be the start of something big!

Right?
