Proverbs
16:24
Pleaseant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing
to the bones.
If you came to hang out at our house (and wouldn't
that be something...all 2,500 of you crammed into our home), you
wouldn't be there long before you'd hear Wendy or me ask one of
our children if they were dripping with honey. Of
course, then you'd ask yourself (or one of the other 2,499 people
trying to move around), "What's that about?" So, as
we like to say down here in the sunny, hot, humid, sticky south,
this here's what it means...
Have you ever noticed that sometimes people say
ugly things to you and it makes you feel...well, bad. I mean,
nobody ever got ripped up one side and down the other by a friend,
boss, or policeman (oops, shared too much, sorry) and then asked
them to do it again because it felt so good, right? Of course
not. Our words have an incredible power over others and, as the
old saying goes, you really can catch more flies with honey than
with vinegar, which begs the question, why do want to catch flies
anyway? I mean, they're nasty, they've got that wierd eye thing
and...oops, sorry, that was the wrong question.
Anyway, we noticed that our children were getting
pretty bad about saying ugly stuff to each other (yeah, like you've
never done that) and so we started asking them if they were dripping
with honey or vinegar and lo and behold - cue the Hallelujah music
- it worked! It has become a great reminder to our entire family
that we need to let our words be like honey and when we do, we
can help others around us feel better (yes, even the 2,500 of
you who are shoulder to shoulder in our house and can't move at
all).
