Ecclesiastes
4:9-10
Two are better than one...if one falls down, his friend can help
him up. But pity the man who falls down and has no one to help
him up.
When our family goes to the beach for vacation,
you will find my sons and me in the ocean jumping waves. No doubt
about it, it's in cement. We love to take on the "monster
waves!" And this year I realized again
why it's so important to do something so daring together.
Somewhere in the middle of our week, when we were
all a little too sunburned and a little too tired to be doing
what we were doing, one of the biggest waves approached us. It
was obvious that we would be able to jump it okay, and we did,
but what we didn't see coming was the fact that Will landed in
one of those unexpected dips on the ocean floor and so where he
ended up was a bit over his head. Not enough to kill him, mind
you, but enough to send him jumping and sputtering as he tried
to get his next breath. And he'd have been fine by himself if
the ocean had taken a break, but it didn't because oceans don't.
No sooner had his nose broken the surface of the water and another
wave was breaking. That's when I swooped in like the SuperDad
I am and lifted him above the wave and set him down on the other
side of it until he could get his breath. Of course, he immediately
went back out to take on the next big one!
But I thought about the wisdom of God and life and
waves and why it's true that 2 are better than one because I know
that there have been - and will be - times in my life when I'm
going to need somebody to help me over the next wave. And so will
you.
The difference between Will being too scared to
go "wave hunting" and him attacking the very next wave
was my strong arm (yes, I'm using the word "strong"
loosely!). More than that, it was the fact that he wasn't alone.
Don't do life by yourself. Invest in someone else
and make sure you're surrounded as well. You never know when the
next wave will hit.
