Job
42:5
My ears had heard of you but now my eyes have seen you.
You know, there really is no substitute for experience.
I mean, it would be nice if we could all just read about stuff
or hear about it and instantly KNOW it, but that's just not the
way we're wired. We are wired to taste and see
and smell and, well, experience. I thought about that today as
I drove down the road in my 1996 Explorer. It is ordinarily a
great ride, but today, on the first of three days with forecasted
highs in the triple digits, it is only a metal box with buttons
that say A/C, but don't actually produce any. What I wouldn't
give for some experience right now...
Job had an incredible moment when he spoke the words
above. He had one of the experiences when he knew that, from that
moment on, things would be different. Not only had he heard about
God, but now he had actually seen - experienced - Him! He would
never again have to question or doubt whether what he had hoped
was true actually would be, umm, true. There is great power in
knowing, great confidence in being sure, and Job learned that.
He also learned that what he thought he knew about God wasn't
even close to all that there was to know.
There will be no substitute in helping the world
see God. Sure, they can hear about Him all day long. All they
have to do is turn on the TV, dial up the right station on the
radio or surf to the holy section of the internet. But the challenge
isn't helping them hear about God; it's actually helping them
see God. And the first place they will look is us.
Now, if that doesn't make you sweat, then I've got
room in the Explorer for you.
