1 Corinthians
2:9
No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love them...
I woke up in bizarro world this morning and it kind of freaked me out. Bizarro World is from Superman and is where Bizarro Superman lives. As Jerry explains it in Seinfeld, in Bizarro World "Up is Down. Down is Up. You say 'Hello' when you leave, 'Good bye' when you arrive." Knowing about Bizarro World and waking up in it are two very different things and it caught me off guard. I little background might help...
Our two sons, Will and Parker, are as different as night and day, white and black, the winning Carolina Panthers and the losing "fill in the latest victim's name here." And we've come to count on their differences to plan our days. We know that Will needs to get the first wake-up shake in the mornings, that we're going to say "Will, hurry up!" 10 or 20 times before we ever say anything to Parker. We realize that we're more likely to find Will fighting the evil in the universe with the toothpaste and toothbrush instead of fighting plaque and potential cavities in his mouth. It's not that Parker's better than Will, it's just that they are actually that opposite. Parker is getting it done while Will is, well, getting ready to start thinking about getting it done.
So, you can imagine my surprise when I walked in this morning to wake them up and Will sat up in bed. I looked to make sure it was actually Will and then skipped his wake-shake and went to Parker. The next time I poked my head in the room, Will's bed was made and his shirt was on and Parker hadn't even started making his bed. "Weird," I thought. When I had poured the cereal and milk, I went back to get them and Will was finished dressing and Parker was stretched out on the floor, PJs still on. My first thought was that they had switched heads in the middle of the night to trick me, but I saw no signs of blood anywhere. No, this was simply too good to be true. Will went on to finish his breakfast first, brush his teeth first and then put his coat, shoes and bookbag on first. It was, as I said, a morning in Bizarro World.
What's the point, you ask? Simply this. I had a hard time enjoying the morning because I had a hard time seeing Will as anything other than his usual slower self. I found myself thinking things like, "Well, this won't last" or "Tomorrow will be more normal." It scares me a bit that our nature is to see people the same way we've always seen them and that because of this, we have a hard time believing that a good change can last.
So what happens when God blows our minds with something we've never seen, or heard, or conceived? What happens when your spouse, or friend, or boss gives his or her heart to Jesus and you wake up in bizarro world where the person who drove you crazy now shows you kindness? Or the person who has apologized a million times before without changing suddenly changes? Do you have the capacity to believe that Bizarro World could possibly be the normal God intends for you and the person you've been praying for so faithfully?
Expect change and then enjoy it when you see it, because you never know what God could be up to in Bizarro World. |
